The 7 Best Black Toilets – Reviews, Features & Specs

Last Updated on July 28, 2023 by toilethaven

Modern black toilets are made to stand out. There are not as many black toilets as whites, and getting a good one, is therefore not easy, especially if you have no plumbing experience/background.

In this post, I will review what I believe are the 7 best black toilets based on the following:

  • Flushing power
  • Overall design
  • Water-efficiency
  • Quality
  • Comfort
  • Cost

Before we go ahead and list the best black toilets, why are almost all toilets white? Why not blue, pink, mustard, or all-black? After all, they say you can’t go wrong with black!

Toilets are mostly white for two major reasons:

  1. They are made of porcelain which naturally occurs as a white substance.
  2. White is a universal color for cleanliness. That’s why it is used in the food industry and hospitals. White is used in industries where hygiene is a sensitive issue.

Black toilets are, however, becoming more popular as more people seek to spruce up their bathrooms. Waking up to the same white toilet day in and day out can get boring. If you know how to style up anything, you can attest that black can go with anything.

The Best Black Toilets are:

Toilet Consumption Style Bowl Type
1. Kohler Cimarron 1.28 GPF Two-piece Elongated
2. Toto Ultramax II 1.28 GPF One-piece Elongated
3. Kohler Santa Rosa 1.6 GPF One-piece Elongated
4. Kohler Memoirs Stately Comfort 1.28 GPF Two-piece Elongated
5. Kohler Wellworth 1,28 GPF Two-piece Round
6. Kohler Highline 1.28 GPF Two-piece Elongated
7. Toto Aquia II 0.9/1.6 GPF Two-piece Elongated

The Kohler brand is the most conspicuous one as far as black toilets are concerned. But it didn’t start yesterday. They introduced the jet-black toilet in the 1920s. Although the black toilet “fever” didn’t spread as anticipated, the last few years have been promising.

The 7 Best Modern Black Toilets Reviews

The following is a detailed review of the 7 best black toilets. Of all the features I looked out for, I would say that flushing performance was top on the list.

There is nothing as irritating as having to flush a toilet twice or even thrice. The second was the overall design. Apart from being an important sanitation item, a toilet should complement the design of your bathroom décor.

The Review

The Kohler Cimarron is one of the best and most popular black toilets. It is a two-piece elongated toilet that boasts very powerful flushing and a versatile design.

Instead of the normal flush valve flapper, the Cimarron comes with an AquaPiston (canister flush valve) housed in the toilet tank. This piston allows water into the toilet bowl from all directions (3600), creating a powerful and efficient flush.

People with mobility problems and tall people generally will enjoy this toilet more. It comes in a comfort/chair-level height of 17.5 inches from the ground to the top of the toilet seat.

Most toilets will, from time to time, start leaking between the tank and the bowl. This is caused by the mounting bolts on the tank either loosening or rusting. The Kohler Cimarron has a DryLock system that eliminates the need for bolts inside the tank.

The mounting gear to the toilet flange is not supplied with the toilet. The same case applies to the toilet seat. You will need to buy this item separately.

The Review

Toto Ultramax II is a single one-piece flush elongated and comfortable height toilet. It is one of the best toilets you can ever buy.

The one-piece design gives this toilet a seamless and smooth body, which is not present in two-piece toilets because of the gap between the tank and the bowl. This is, therefore, a sleek toilet which makes it easy and fast to clean.

The Toto Ultramax II uses Toto’s patented Tornado flushing system, which is one of the most powerful flushing systems in the industry. It incorporates the use of a 3-inch flush valve (instead of the usual 2 inches) and sideways-facing nozzles at the top of the bowl.

This toilet, therefore, does not have rim holes. The wide flush valve ensures that water leaves the tank faster and enters the bowl with more force. As the water enters the bowl, because of the orientation of the nozzles, it forms a vortex or a cyclone inside the bowl, which is effective in scrubbing and rinsing the bowl.

Unlike the older Toto models on G-max flushing system, which used 1.6 gallons per flush, this toilet uses only 1.2 gallons per flush but still flushes powerfully. It is, therefore, WaterSense certified and can be used in every corner of the United States.

The comfortable height bowl makes this toilet easy to sit and stand on. It comes with a soft closed toilet seat to match the elongated bowl, which is more comfortable than a round bowl. If you are easily irritated by the sound of a toilet seat slamming on the bowl, this is your toilet.

Toto Ultramax II black toilet looks stunning, but it is pricier. I would have placed this toilet in the number 1 spot were it not for its price.

If you would like a dual-flush black toilet, the Toto CST746CSM#51 Drake is a great option. Check it out

  • EPA WaterSense certified
  • Toilet dimensions: 31 x 20.75 x 29 inches

The Review

The Kohler Santa Rosa Black Toilet is a one-piece compact elongated toilet. It utilizes a small space similar to a round toilet without compromising on the comfort of an elongated toilet. It is, therefore, a very ideal toilet for people looking for small, black, and elongated toilets.

The AquaPiston flushing technology ensures only 1.28 gallons of water are used per flush while delivering a very powerful flush. The water flushes and cleans the bowl simultaneously.

There is a 16.5-inch distance between the floor and the top of the toilet bowl. If you add a toilet seat, you are guaranteed to get nearly 19 inches of comfort height. It is, therefore, a great choice for old folk, the tall and disabled.

A soft close toilet seat is supplied with this toilet. You can therefore say no to toilet slamming, which can be irritating.

The integration of the tank and bowl into a one-piece toilet means the toilet is smooth and without nooks or crannies. It, therefore, makes it very easy to clean and maintain the general hygiene of this toilet.

Shipping a one-piece toilet is not always easy, though. This is due to the resultant weird shape. It, therefore, is possible to receive a broken toilet. It has even happened to some people twice in a row.

The Review

The Kohler Memoirs Stately Comfort is an elegant and beautiful black toilet. Its bowl is elongated to give the user a larger surface to sit on, and hence it is very comfortable.

From the floor to the top of the bowl is around 16.5 inches, which will increase when you add a toilet seat. This makes it a comfortable height toilet whereby sitting and standing will be very easy.

The AquaPiston canister in the toilet tank, instead of the traditional flapper, directs water into the bowl from all directions. A very powerful and efficient flush is therefore delivered. You will hardly ever need to flush twice.

While delivering a powerful flush, this toilet is very water efficient. It consumes only 1.28 gallons per flush, making it WaterSense certified. It can therefore be sold anywhere without restrictions.

It is, however, disappointing to know that this toilet does not have the toilet seat included in the package. You will need to buy a seat and a wax ring separately. Toilet bolts are, however, supplied with it.

The Kohler Wellworth Classic Black toilet is an elongated two-piece toilet utilizing Kohler’s class five flushing technology, designed for bulk flushing.

It has a large flush valve which allows rapid release of water into the bowl. Its canister flush valve allows water to enter the bowl from all sides resulting in a powerful flush. It uses only 1.28 gallons per flush and is. Therefore, WaterSense is certified.

This black toilet has a round-front bowl. It is, therefore, space-efficient and would be a good choice for people with small bathrooms.

This toilet, however, comes in standard height. The floor-to-bowl height is 14.5 inches and therefore is not ADA-compliant.

You will need to buy a toilet seat separately as this does not come with the toilet package. Mounting bolts and a wax ring are also not included.

The Review

If you are looking to replace your old 10-inch rough-in toilet with a new and modern black toilet with the same rough, then you are in luck.

The Kohler Highline Black Toilet delivers a powerful flush using only 1.28 gallons per flush. Residents in places with strict water conservation laws, like California, can buy this product.

Its bowl is at a height of 16.5 inches which makes it a comfortable height toilet. If you include the 2 inches in a toilet seat, you are guaranteed to have almost 19 inches. To maximize your comfort, the toilet bowl is elongated to offer you more space to sit on.

The installation of this toilet is pretty easy. The manual is also very easy to follow. Persons with no plumbing experience would not have a problem installing it.

This toilet does not, however, come with a toilet seat. It also does not have the installation gear like a wax ring. You will need to buy these items separately.

A one-year limited warranty is offered after the purchase.

The Review

The Toto Aquia II Black toilet is a two-piece elongated toilet with dual flush functionality. You can either use the 0.9 gallons for liquids or use the 1.6 gallons for solids. It is, therefore, a WaterSense-certified toilet.

This toilet is compatible with many of the Toto washlet bidet seats. Alternatively, you could buy a normal soft close elongated seat with its bowl.

It has a skirted design that makes it look stylish and modern, which it is, without a doubt. Cleaning and maintaining cleanliness is, therefore, easy and fast.

The mounting hardware is included in the package when you buy this toilet. You will, however, need to buy a toilet seat separately.

Tall, old, and people with mobility problems will, however, feel disadvantaged by this toilet. It comes at a standard height which is also not ADA-compliant.

The installation of this toilet is somewhat different from most. Most people report that they struggle before they can finally figure out how to do it.

Black Toilets Buying Guide

The following are the factors to consider while buying a toilet and not just a black toilet.

1. Cost

black-toilet

Black toilets, like all other toilets, don’t cost the same. The final price of a toilet is determined by its features and specifications and, to some extent, the brand.

Some toilets are also sold without some accessories like toilets, mounting bolts, and wax rings. A toilet that would have seemed fairly priced could easily end up being expensive after buying the accessories separately.

It is, therefore, always wise to know how much you need to spend on a toilet and check what the toilet is sold with or without.

2. The rough-in

The rough-in of a toilet is the distance between the rear finished wall of the toilet and the center of the drainpipe. You can also measure it from the wall to either of the two toilet bolts if the toilet is already installed.

Most toilets have a standard rough-in of 12 inches, but others like 10 and 14 inches also exist. Get this measurement before buying your toilet.

3. Type of Toilet

black-toilet

A black toilet, like all other toilets, will either be a one-piece toilet or a two-piece toilet. Each of them has its advantages and disadvantages.

One-piece toilets are compact and look more modern than two-piece toilets, though. Most one-piece toilets are also more expensive than two-piece toilets.

4. Shape of the Toilet bowl

Toilet bowls come in two shapes: round and elongated toilet bowls. Elongated toilet bowls are more comfortable than round bowls. They, however, need more space in the bathroom. Elongated toilet bowls are roughly 18.5 inches in length, while round toilet bowls are about 16.5 inches.

5. Height

black-toilet

These days toilet manufacturers are producing toilets in what is called comfort height, chair height, or universal height. Comfort-height toilets are taller than standard-height toilets by about two inches.

People with mobility problems, the old and tall, find these toilets very helpful. If you feel a comfortable height toilet will be too tall for you, you can always opt for the standard height toilets.

6. Legal Requirements

There is a legal requirement by the Americans with Disability Act requiring toilets in public to be 17 to 19 inches in seat height. This is especially important so as not to discriminate against persons living with a disability.

Although it is not common to find black toilets in public bathrooms, should you ever think of having one in your business premise, always comply with this act.

7. Toilet Dimensions

Apart from being either one-piece, two-piece, elongated, or round, other toilet dimensions are critical, especially if every inch in your bathroom counts.

Before buying your favorite black toilet, always check its total length, width, and height and compare them against your bathroom space.

8. Water Efficiency

best-black-toilet

A water-efficient toilet is good for your pocket and the environment. The more water a toilet consumes, the higher your water bills run and the more detrimental it is to the environment.

In places like California, for instance, you cannot buy a toilet with a GPF rating of more than 1.28 gallons per flush. If you live in California, this is an important factor you need to look out for.

Read more on the pros and cons of 1.28 vs. 1.6 gallons per flush toilet in this post.

9. The Flushing Power

Different toilets have different flushing systems. In general, toilets either flush by gravity or are pressure assisted.

Apart from that, each toilet brand has its flushing technology that works differently from the other brand. Moreover, a toilet can either have a single flushing system or a dual flush system. Choose the one that best fits your needs.

10. Design

Different black toilets come in different designs. Some are skirted, while others are not. The overall design of a toilet either makes it appealing to the eye or not. Skirted toilets look sleeker and are easier to clean.

The Pros and Cons of Black Toilets

What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of buying a black toilet? Should you buy a black toilet or not?

black-toilet

Pros

1. Brightens up a dull bathroom

As much as white colors are involved with bright things, too much can be dull and boring. A black toilet breaks the monotony of the same white toilet, sink, and tub every day. Black toilets are also shiny and look bold.

2. They are unique

Black toilets are not for everyone. If you ask someone who owns a black toilet, they will tell you it stands out! Guests go to the bathroom, and they are awed by it. If you are happy being unique, then go for it.

3. Hides some waste/stains

White toilets easily get stained. An easily stained toilet means you spend lots of time scrubbing it. A black toilet would not be affected by such. Apart from that, small wastes that might contrast against the white surface of a white toilet are hidden by black toilets.

4. Can be matched with other black bathroom items

Imagine the thought of having a black toilet matched by a black sink and black tub. That is a bathroom most people would want to spend a great deal of their time in. As it has been said time and again, you can never go wrong with black.

5. They are modern

Black toilets are modern, boasting some of the latest features in the toilet industry. Owning a black toilet is also associated with being stylish and of great taste. If you decide to own a black toilet, just know that you will be in great company.

Cons

kohler-black-toilet

1. They are expensive

A black toilet with the same features and specifications as a white toilet by the same company is more expensive. Porcelain, used to make toilets, is naturally white in color. Painting it another color, like black, costs more money; hence black toilets can be expensive.

2. They stand out

As has been said before, black toilets are very conspicuous. They are, therefore, not made for everyone. Some people are just contended with being simple.

3. Not suitable for areas with hard water

Hard water doesn’t go well with black toilets. White water stains, especially from calcium, might form in different parts of your bowl, which are very annoying

4. Dust particles are easily seen

Brown dust particles and black toilets don’t go together. They are very noticeable. In general, black toilets needs more cleaning than a white toilet.

How to Clean a Black Toilet

black-toilet

The best way to remove white stains from a black toilet bowl is using Bar Keeper’s friend cleaning agent. This product is readily available, inexpensive, and works like a charm. Apart from that, it does not discolor or scratch the toilet bowl.

Note: It is not a good practice to use toilet tank tablets. They are advertised as being good at helping to reduce toilet bowl stains. These tablets, however, contain chemicals that eat away the rubber components of the toilet tank. Expensive repairs can hence be expected.

The best thing to do is to drain the toilet dry and fill it with vinegar. Leave it overnight or for 12 hours a day. Flush down the vinegar and clean the tank with a kitchen disinfectant using a long brush. Remember to wear rubber gloves.
