11 Best Comfort Height Toilets – For Seniors and Tall Folks

Last Updated on July 28, 2023 by toilethaven

Comfort height toilets, also known as ADA toilets or universal/right/chair height toilets, are toilets with a seat height of 17 to 19 inches. They are easy to sit and stand from, especially for seniors and tall people.

The opposite of comfort height toilets is the standard height toilets. I have written about the pros and cons of each in this post.

In this post, I have reviewed 11 of the best flushing comfort height toilets. Apart from the toilet seat height, I have also considered other factors such as design, water efficiency, flushing power, and size in ranking them.

What is the Best Comfort Height Toilet?

The following are the best comfort height toilets:

Toilet Bowl Height
1. Convenient Height 20 inches
2. Toto UltraMax II 16. 125 inches
3. American Standard Champion 4 16.5 inches
4. Kohler K-6999-0 Memoirs 16.5 inches
5. Toto Drake 16.5 inches
6. Kohler Cimarron 16.5 inches
7. American Standard Cadet 3 16.5 inches
8. Kohler Highline 16.5 inches
9. Woodbridge T-0001 16.5 inches
10. Niagara Stealth Toilet 17 inches
11. Swiss Madison St. Tropez 16.5 inches

Comfort Height Toilet Reviews

This is a more detailed review of the best comfort height toilets. As stated, I also considered many other factors, not just the toilet bowl height.

1. Convenient Height 20 Inch Extra Tall Toilet

20 inch Extra Tall Toilet. Convenient Height bowl...
  • Extra tall toilet bowl: 20 inches. Height top of seat: 21". Solid metal handle and new generation dual flush system
  • Adds bathroom safety. Helps sit down and stand up more easily. Helps prevent falls.
  • High performance. Designed and engineered by Convenient Height Co., Massachusetts

FEATURES AND SPECIFICATIONS

  • Two-piece toilet
  • Elongated toilet bowl
  • 0.9/1.28 gallons per flush
  • 12-inch rough-in
  • Vitreous china material
  • Slow close toilet seat included
  • White
  • WaterSense certified
  • Gravity flush
  • Metal handle
  • Floor mounted
  • 120 pounds
  • Fully glazed body and trapway
  • Toilet bowl height: 20 inches
  • Depth: 27 inches
  • Width: 14.75 inches
  • Height: 36 inches

Is there anything like too much comfort? If that phrase doesn’t associate with you, then maybe the Convenient Height comfort height toilet is the toilet for you. It has a bowl height of 20 inches, which increases to 21 inches when you add the toilet seat. It is one of the best toilets for seniors and people with limited mobility.

Its flushing performance is decent, using only 0.9 or 1.28 gallons of water per flush. Therefore, this toilet is WaterSense certified and can be sold everywhere in the United States, including California.

It would be a shame to use a 20-inch comfort height toilet and then bend all the way down to put the toilet seat and lid down to avoid slamming. The Convenient Height toilet, therefore, comes with a slow-close toilet seat. You give it a small push, and the seat and lid close slowly.

Despite the high bowl of this toilet, it is quite compact. It has a length of only 27 inches, less than that of a standard elongated toilet. In fact, most round-front toilets have a length of about 27 inches.

This toilet will give you the comfort of an elongated toilet while utilizing a small space. You can remove a round toilet and replace it with this one if it has a rough-in of 12 inches. This toilet is, however, very tall, with its maximum height being 36 inches.

When you order this toilet, it will be shipped in 2 different boxes. This helps to prevent the toilet from breaking during transportation. Just like in other 2-piece toilets, there is no guarantee that the two packages will arrive at the same time.

Although comfort-height toilets are a great introduction to our bathrooms, some people will find this toilet too high. It will be a great product for some people, while others prefer a shorter, more comfortable toilet.

2. Toto UltraMax II

Toto MS604114CEFG#01 UltraMax II One-Piece...
  • Category: UNCATEGORIZED -- UNCATEGORIZED
  • Cannot be shipped to California

Toto Ultramax II is a one-piece single flush elongated and comfortable toilet. It is one of the Best Toto Toilets.

Features and Specifications

  • One-piece toilet
  • Elongated toilet bowl
  • Chrome trip lever finish
  • 1.28 gallons per flush
  • Tornado flush
  • EPA WaterSense certified
  • Vitreous China material
  • Cefiontect glaze
  • Gravity flush
  • Trip lever on the left
  • WaterSense certified
  • Soft close seat included
  • 99 pounds
  • 12-inch rough-in
  • Floor mounted
  • Toilet bowl height: 16.125 inches
  • Depth: 28.3 inches
  • Width: 16.6 inches
  • Height:  28.8 inches
  • Mounting bolts and wax ring not included
  • One-year limited warranty

Although Toto Ultramax II doesn’t have the tallest toilet bowl, it is still a comfortable height toilet and will be best suited for some people who don’t want an overly tall toilet. It has a toilet bowl height of 16.125 inches without a toilet seat, translating to 17.25 inches when you install the toilet seat.

This extremely powerful flushing toilet uses Toto’s Tornado flushing system. The tornado flush system works effectively by creating a strong whirlpool effect which cleans and rinses the bowl. This is affected by 2 powerful nozzles positioned inside the bowl. Instead of water flowing in a straight line like in older flushing systems, the water from the nozzles creates a centrifugal cyclonic rinsing action.

The surface of the Ultramax II, just like other Toto products, is coated with Cefiontect glaze. This gives it a lubricious quality that prevents the buildup of mold, limescale, and waste matter.

Every time you flush this toilet, it will use 1.28 gallons of water. It is therefore certified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a WaterSense-compliant toilet. It can therefore be sold everywhere in the USA, including California, where toilet solids cannot exceed 1.28 gallons per flush.

A soft close toilet seat is included when you purchase this toilet which will henceforth eliminate the irritating sound of a toilet seat slamming on the bowl. The seat is ergonomically designed to offer more comfort and contains non-slip bumpers to prevent it from shifting on the bowl.

Compared to the Toto Drake comfort height toilet, the Ultramax II is a little shorter, more water efficient, is a one-piece toilet, has a more advanced flushing system, and is a lot more expensive. The Toto Drake uses the G-max flushing system, but Toto is moving away from that to the E-Max flushing system, which is more water efficient.

If you are therefore looking for a one-piece comfort height toilet that is not too high, then the Toto Ultramax II would be perfect.

Toto Carlyle II would be perfect if you would like a skirted toilet. It is the skirted version of the Toto Ultramax II. Check it out in this post.

3. American Standard Champion 4 Right Height Toilet

American Standard 2034314.222 Champion 4 One-Piece...
  • CLOG-FREE RELIABILITY: Large 4-in. flush valve for optimal power
  • EASY TO KEEP CLEAN: One-piece toilet has less seams and crevices
  • EVERCLEAN SURFACE: Inhibits stain and odor-causing buildup

American Standard Champion 4 is a single flush elongated one-piece comfort height toilet. This is the new model of the last Champion 4 after the two-piece model was discontinued. It is available in white, bone, and linen.

Features and Specifications

  • Elongated toilet
  • Slow close toilet seat included
  • 1.6 gallons per flush
  • 4-inch piston action accelerator flush valve
  • 12-inch rough-in
  • Vitreous china material
  • EverClean surface
  • Floor mounted
  • One-piece toilet
  • 10-year limited warranty
  • Mounting bolts and wax ring included
  • Matching toilet bolt caps included
  • Chrome trip lever
  • 2 3/8 inch full glazed trapway
  • Toilet bowl height: 16.5 inches
  • Depth: 29.75 inches
  • Width: 17.75 inches
  • Height: 29.5 inches

The American Standard Champion 4 has a toilet bowl height of 16.5 inches without a toilet seat. However, this toilet is sold with a soft closed toilet seat. The height will therefore increase to around 17.5 inches when you include the seat.

A soft close toilet seat is designed in such a way that it can lower itself back slowly to close the bowl and avoid slamming. It is a great addition to a comfortable height toilet, especially when the user is elderly, has limited mobility, and can’t bend to close the toilet seat. Both the seat and lid are slow close.

The best way to flush a toilet is to dump water in the toilet bowl within a very short time. This creates more force than evacuates the contents of the bowl fast. American Standard used this knowledge in designing the Champion 4.

It has a 4-inch piston accelerator flush valve, unlike the ordinary 3-inch flush valves. As its name suggests, water accelerates as it leaves the tank to the bowl through the big 4-inch flush valve, creating a powerful flushing action. The American Standard Champion 4 is one of the best anti-clogging toilets thanks to its wide trapway.

Its surface is coated with its patented EverClean antimicrobial additive that inhibits mold and bacteria growth. This, combined with its smooth and seamless one-piece design, ensures that cleaning this toilet is a cinch.

The one thing that works against the American Standard Champion 4 is its rating of 1.6 gallons per flushing. This is unlike most modern toilets, which use 1.28 gallons or less.

An alternative to the Champion 4 would be the American Standard Compact Cadet 3 Flowise. Check its comparison with the Champion 4 in this post.

4. Kohler K-6999-0 Memoirs

  • Vitreous china material

  • Height: 31.43 inches
  • One-year limited warranty

The Kohler Memoirs Classic will be ideal if you need a bold, modern-looking, comfortable toilet. It is available in white, black, almond, biscuit, dune, ice gray, and sandbar.

The top of the toilet bowl is 16.5 inches without a toilet seat. The total height of the toilet bowl after adding a toilet seat will therefore be about 17.5 inches.

This toilet does not, however, come with a toilet seat. Therefore, You will need to buy one separately, and its total price will increase slightly. If it fits, you may purchase a Kohler toilet seat or a seat from any other brand. The Kohler Cachet slow-close toilet seat will be perfect if you buy a toilet seat from Kohler.

The Memoirs Classic uses Kohler’s AquaPiston flushing technology. This eliminates the ordinary toilet flapper and introduces the canister that allows water to flow into the bowl from a 360 degrees angle faster and forcefully.

The canister flush also has a wide water entry than exit in the ratio of 3:2, which gives the water more power as it moves in the bowl and, therefore, forcefully forces the waste through the trap. It consumes 1.28 gallons of water per flush, which is very efficient. This toilet can be sold to California residents because it meets the State’s requirements.

The concealed trapway design is very different from other skirted toilets, which helps to enhance its design. This design makes it easy to clean around this toilet, as there are no crevices.

The Kohler Memoirs black toilet looks good if you want to try something different from the usual white. It, however, tends to be more expensive because of the processes involved in its production.

If you need a round comfort height toilet, consider Kohler K-3933-0 Memoirs’ two-piece comfort height toilet with a stately design.

5. Toto Drake 2-Piece ADA Toilet

TOTO CST744SL#01 Drake 2-Piece Ada Toilet with...
  • Item may ship in more than one box and may arrive separately

TOTO CST744SL#01 Drake is a single flush two-piece elongated comfort height toilet. This is among the best-performing toilet in the Toto Drake series toilets.

Features and Specifications

  • 1.6 gallons per flush
  • Two-piece toilet
  • Elongated toilet bowl
  • G-Max flushing system
  • Single flush
  • Chrome trip lever
  • Grazed trapway
  • Toilet seat not included
  • Mounting bolts and wax ring not included
  • Toilet bolts included

  • Toilet bowl height: 16.5 inches
  • Depth: 28.125 inches
  • Width: 19.875 inches
  • Height: 30.5 inches
  • One-year limited warranty

The Toto Drake ADA-compliant toilet has a comfort height of 16.5 inches. This is measured from the toilet’s base to the top of the bowl without a seat. It is sold without a seat, and you will therefore need to buy one separately.

Unlike some toilets, which are specifically designed to be used for residential purposes only, this toilet is powerful enough for both residential and commercial applications.

It uses Toto G-max flushing technology, which consists of a large flush, an extra-large siphon jet, and a 2-1/8 inch fully glazed trapway. This system quickly drives a large amount of water into the toilet bowl, resulting in a powerful and cleansing flush.

An elongated toilet bowl is a good combination to match with a comfortable height toilet. It is longer than a round-front toilet bowl by 2 inches. It, therefore, provides more surface area to sit on so you don’t feel squeezed together. They are especially a great pick for gentlemen going by their anatomy, which can always do with a bit more space.

One thing working against this model of the Toto Drake is that it uses 1.6 gallons of water per flush. It is, therefore, not WaterSense certified and, as a result, cannot be sold in places like California.

To take care of that problem, Toto has a new model, which is Toto CST746CSMFG#01 Drake. It is a dual-flush toilet with a rating of 0.8/1.6 gallons per flush. You can therefore save water by opting to use 0.8 gallons to flush liquids and 1.6 gallons to flush solids. Check it out here.

If you would like a more water-efficient and better-looking toilet, consider the Toto Drake II. It has a rating of 1.28 gallons per flush. Check out the comparisons between Toto Drake and Toto Drake II in this post.

The Toto Drake comfort height toilet is a powerful flushing toilet and is also competitively priced. It comes with a 1-year warranty.

6. Kohler Cimarron Comfort Height Toilet

KOHLER K-3609-0 Cimarron Comfort Height Elongated...
  • Two-piece toilet.
  • Elongated bowl offers added room and comfort.
  • Comfort Height(R) feature offers chair-height seating that makes sitting down and standing up easier for most adults.

The Kohler Cimarron toilet is a 2-piece single flush elongated comfort height toilet. Apart from this model, there are several other models, which include:

  • Kohler K-3589-0 Cimarron – 1.6 GPF
  • Kohler K-3851-0 Cimarron Round Toilet
  • Kohler K-3828-0 Cimarron One-Piece Toilet

Why is Kohler Cimarron K-3609-7 a good toilet?

Features and Specifications

  • 2-piece toilet
  • Elongated bowl
  • 1.28 gallons per flush
  • WaterSense certified
  • AquaPiston technology
  • 12-inch rough-in
  • Toilet seat not included
  • DryLock tank installation
  • Single flush
  • Toilet bowl height: 16.5 inches
  • Depth: 29.5 inches
  • Width: 17.625 inches
  • Height: 30.75 inches
  • One year warranty

The Kohler Cimarron has a toilet bowl height of 16.5 inches without a toilet seat. When you add the extra height, you will get it from the seat. Then the total height comes to about 17.5 inches. This toilet is sold without a toilet seat, and you will need to buy one separately.

Although this model has a 12-inch rough-in, the Kohler K-3851-0 Cimarron has a 10-inch rough-in and a round-front bowl. The Kohler Cimarron skirted toilet also has a rough-in of 12 inches, but a special kit is available to change it into a 10 or 14-inch rough-in toilet.

Flushing-wise, the Kohler Cimarron is a very effective and powerful toilet. It uses Kohler’s AquaPiston flushing technology, which is more precision-engineered than an ordinary toilet flapper.

With an ordinary flapper, one side is hinged, and therefore when you push the handle, water starts flowing into the bowl from one side. The AquaPiston canister, on the other hand, lifts off vertically, allowing the water to enter the flush valve from a 360 degrees angle.

The water entry point at the flush valve is wide than its exit in a ratio of 3:2. Because of that design. The water builds up pressure as it moves down to the bowl, resulting in a powerful flush.

The DryLock toilet tank installation is designed in a way that the toilet tank has no bolt holes. Its bolts are normally hooked from underneath the toilet tank; you only need to fit it on top of the bowl and tighten it.

This toilet has a rating of 1.28 gallons per flush and is. Therefore, WaterSense is certified. This means it can be sold in places with strict water conservation rules, like California.

Although Kohler Cimarron is available in various colors, the Kohler Cimarron black toilet is one of the best black toilets to buy.

7. American Standard Cadet 3 FloWise

American Standard Cadet 3 FloWise is a single flush 2-piece round-front toilet with a concealed trapway. Toilets with concealed trapways are also called skirted toilets.

Features and Specifications

  • 2-piece toilet
  • Round/elongated toilet
  • Single 1.28 gallons per flush
  • Concealed trapway
  • American Standard’s EverClean surface
  • Slow-closing toilet seat and lid included
  • PowerWash rims

  • Vitreous china material
  • WaterSense certified
  • 12-inch rough-in
  • Stainless steel hardware

  • Wax ring and supply line not included
  • 5-year limited warranty
  • Toilet bowl height: 16.5 inches
  • Depth: 28.25 inches
  • Width: 15.75 inches
  • Height: 30.75 inches

The American Standard Cadet 3 FloWise is an excellent pick for someone with a small bathroom but still wants the convenience of a comfortable height toilet.

Round-front toilets, unlike elongated toilets, take up less space in the bathroom, and therefore in a situation where every inch of the bathroom counts, this toilet would be ideal. The length of a round toilet bowl is about 16.5 inches, while that of an elongated bowl is about 18.5 inches. You, therefore, get to save 2 inches of space by installing a round toilet.

The skirted toilet design ensures that it has few crevices, and therefore cleaning it is so easy and fast. Its surface is also coated with American Standard’s EverClean antimicrobial additive that prevents the growth of mold and bacteria and therefore keeps your toilet shiny and clean for longer.

The Cadet 3 FloWise uses only 1.28 gallons of water for every flush. It is, therefore, WaterSense certified and can be sold anywhere in the United States, including California.

To go with the comfort height, a soft-close toilet seat is included when you buy this toilet. A soft closed toilet seat is a good combination with a comfortable height toilet. Otherwise, you would need to bend down to manually close the toilet slowly or slam the seat on the bowl.

If you would, however, want to buy an elongated American Standard Cadet 3 FloWise toilet, these are the models to choose from:

  • American Standard 2989101.020 Cadet 3 1.28 GPF Elongated Toilet with 12-In Rough-In – Two-piece toilet with a concealed trapway
  • American Standard 2403128.020 Cadet 3-FloWise Tall Height 1.28 GPF Single Flush Elongated Toilet – 1-piece compact elongated toilet
  • American Standard 2467016.020 Cadet Right Height Elongated Pressure-Assisted Toilet, 1.6 GPF

A 10-inch rough-in model is also available. This is its description: American Standard 270DB.001.020 Cadet 3 Round Front FloWise Two-Piece High-Efficiency Toilet with 10-Inch Rough-In.

The American Standard Cade 3 toilets are affordable and perform well, whichever model you choose to buy.

Kohler K-3999-0 Highline is a single flush two-piece elongated comfort height toilet. It is an affordable and great flushing toilet.

Features and Specifications

  • Elongated toilet

  • Floor mounted
  • Toilet bowl height: 16.5 inches
  • Depth: 29.75 inches
  • Width: 18 inches
  • Height: 31.25 inches
  • One-year limited warranty

Kohler Highline Comfort toilet has a toilet bowl height of 16.5 inches without a toilet seat. With a toilet seat included, the total height from the floor to the top of the seat will be about 17.5 inches.

Like other Kohler toilets, the Highline does not come without a toilet seat, so you will need to buy one separately. Most toilet seats are standard, and you can choose to buy a Kohler toilet seat or any other brand.

The Class Five flushing technology used by the Kohler Highline is designed for bulk flushing. This technology involves using a large flush valve. As a result, a huge amount of water is dumped into the toilet bowl within a very short time which makes the toilet forcefully eject the waste out through the trap.

If you have an old 10-inch rough-in toilet that you want to replace with a comfortable height toilet, Kohler K-3713-7 Highline Classic Comfort Height Toilet would be a great choice. It has a round toilet bowl which is even better if you have a small bathroom.

Like most modern Kohler toilets, the Kohler Highline comfort height toilet uses the DryLock system to install the toilet tank. This system eliminates the need for toilet tank bolt holes which causes the toilets to leak after some time.

Its water consumption is also pretty low at only 1.28 gallons per flush. This means it is, therefore, WaterSense certified and can be sold anywhere in the United States.

The Kohler K-3493-0 Highline Classic Pressure Lite comfort height toilet would be a decent choice if you want a pressure-assisted toilet. Check it out here on.

The Woodbridge T-0001 is a dual flush one-piece elongated comfort height toilet with a seamless curvy design. It is a beautifully designed toilet that is so sleek and modern.

Features and Specifications.

  • One-piece toilet
  • Elongated toilet bowl
  • 1/1.6 gallons per flush
  • 12-inch rough-in
  • 129 pounds
  • Ceramic made
  • Siphon jet dual flush
  • Soft close toilet seat included
  • Water sense certified
  • Chrome finish flush rectangular buttons
  • Wax ring and bolts included
  • The water supply line is not included
  • Floor mounted
  • Toilet bowl height: 16.5 inches
  • Depth: 28.5 inches
  • Width: 14.5 inches
  • Height: 27.5 inches
  • Five-year limited warranty

The Woodbridge T-0001 has a toilet bowl height of 16.5 inches without a toilet seat. When you add the soft close toilet seat which it supplied, the height from the floor to the top of the toilet seat when closed (including the lid) is 18 inches.

This toilet stands out because of its design. It is a seamless one-piece pure white toilet without corners or crevices. It is hard to use beauty and toilet in the same sentence, but in my experience, this product can only be compared to the Kohler Veil intelligent tankless toilet.

It is very easy and fast to clean the Woodbridge T-0001. While speaking about ease of cleaning this toilet, the soft close toilet seat which it is supplied with has a quick release mechanism. This means you don’t need to uninstall the entire seat while cleaning the toilet. The toilet seat mounting remains intact when you push a button and lift off the seat. To reattach it after cleaning, slide it back on the mountings, and that’s it!

Flushing-wise, this is a siphon-flushing toilet with a fully glazed trapway that gives a powerful yet quiet flush utilizing 1 gallon or 1.6 gallons of water per flush. It is, therefore, WaterSense certified and can be sold anywhere, including California. It would be a shame if it weren’t since it is manufactured in Cerritos, California.

The one thing that will trouble you initially is the installation of this toilet. Due to its skirted design, mounting it on the closet flange is harder than a non-skirted toilet, where the bolts are easy to slot in and tighten. If you are a handyman/woman, you can do it with the help of the user manual, which the toilet comes with. Most people, however, prefer calling in a plumber.

10. Niagara  77001WHCO1 Stealth Toilet

No products found.

Niagara Stealth is a two-piece single flush pressure-assisted elongated toilet with a comfortable height. It is one of the most water-efficient toilets in the market.

Features and Specifications

  • 2-piece toilet
  • Elongated toilet bowl
  • Pressure-assisted flush
  • 0.8 gallons per flush
  • Fluidmasters 400A fill valve
  • Floor mounted
  • EPA WaterSense certified

  • Mounting bolts and wax ring not included
  • Fully glazed 2-inch trapway
  • 800g MaP score
  • Toilet dimensions: 28.875 x 18.25 x 31 inches

If you are looking for a way to bring your water bill down while at the same time having a comfortable height toilet, then the Niagara Stealth toilet is your best bet. It does not have the backing of a strong brand name like the Kohlers or Totos, but this toilet has been well made.

The Niagara Stealth is a powerful and quiet flushing toilet. With an impressive MaP score of 800g, you can be sure that you will be unlikely to experience clogs with this toilet. Its water consumption is surprisingly low at only 0.8 gallons per flush. Therefore, it is EPA WaterSense certified and can be sold in any corner of the United States.

This is a pressure-assisted toilet. It contains a patented Stealth flush chamber inside the toilet tank. Water flowing into the tank is mixed with compressed air resulting in water under pressure. When you flush the toilet, the water gashes out and immediately evacuates the contents of the toilet bowl. You will hardly ever need to flush twice.

The distance between the toilet’s base and the bowl’s top is 17 inches. It is, therefore, a tall toilet which will be a very comfortable product for tall people. The elongated toilet bowl makes it even more comfortable.

Unfortunately, The Niagara Stealth doesn’t come with a toilet seat, so you will need to buy one separately. The mounting hardware is also not included, and therefore the price will be a little higher than what might be advertised when you include all the missing components.

From the floor to the top of the toilet bowl, it measures 16.5 inches. You are therefore guaranteed to get more height when you include the toilet seat height.

The depth of this toilet is 26.5 inches. This means it is very space-efficient, and you can easily install it in bathrooms where other elongated toilets cannot fit. It is especially a great choice for people looking for the comfort of an elongated toilet, but their space can only fit a round toilet. You can replace an old round toilet with this compact elongated toilet as long as it has a 12-inch rough-in.

The Tornado flush system is associated with Toto toilets, but the Swiss Madison also has incorporated it in their toilets, and the flushing power is amazing. It is a dual-flush toilet that only consumes 0.8 or 1.28 gallons per flush. It is, therefore, WaterSense certified and can be sold anywhere in the US. You typically use 0.8 gallons to flush liquids, while the 1.28 gallons per flush button is for solids.

A soft close toilet seat is included when you purchase this toilet. The slow close feature is so helpful by preventing the seat from slamming on the bowl, which is irritating and can potentially cause pinched fingers. This toilet seat has a quick-release mechanism, and you can quickly remove it from the mountings and reinstall it during cleaning.

Due to its skirted design, installing a Swiss Madison is not as easy as a non-skirted toilet. This is because the installation must happen inside the toilet skirt, and the access area is small. If you are a hands-on person, you can give it a shot, but it will still take time. Alternatively, you should call in a professional.

Standard Height Vs. Comfort Height Toilets

best-comfort-height-toilet

Should you buy a comfortable height toilet? I must agree that comfort-height toilets have been aggressively marketed, and everyone feels like they should get one. While comfort height toilets are great, standard height toilets were not designed by mistake.

As a matter of fact, most people are more comfortable using a standard-height toilet than a comfortable-height toilet which is ironic. Using a toilet with your feet dangling in the air is both uncomfortable and a health risk.

Comfort height toilets were designed to cater to tall people, the elderly, people with disabilities, and people recovering from knee, hip, or any other surgery. Therefore, if you don’t fall under this category, you should consider using a standard-height toilet.

If you live in a house with several bathrooms, you should consider installing both standard and comfort-height toilets. It is especially important if you have kids or other members of the family who are not very tall.

All in all, comfort height toilets are a great innovation, and combined with an elongated toilet bowl, they provide premium comfort to the toilet user. If you are unable to use a standard-height toilet, you should consider buying a portable toilet seat riser which you can also use when you are traveling.

Comfort Height Toilets Vs. Wall-Mounted Toilets

Wall-mounted toilets, which are also known as wall-hung toilets, are a type of toilets that are mounted on the bathroom wall as opposed to other toilets which are floor-mounted.

In wall-mounted toilets, only the toilet bowl is visible because the toilet tank is concealed in the bathroom wall. A carrier frame is mounted on the wall, which is used to anchor the toilet tank and mount the toilet bowl.

A thick wall is then used to conceal the tank, carrier, and plumbing works. These toilets are, therefore, harder to install, and only a professional or a handyperson can do it.

The good thing about wall-mounted toilets is that their heights can be adjusted to suit the desired height. Although the actual toilets are not expensive, the total cost of the toilet, carrier, and bathroom remodel is very high.

Types of Comfort Height Toilets

Comfort height toilets, just like standard height toilets, have a few variations. Let us see the different types of toilets to help you choose better.

1. Dual Flush Vs. Single Flush Toilets

Dual flush toilets have 2 flush options. The user may decide to use the partial flush or the full flush. If a toilet is rated 1/1.6 gallons per flush, you should use 1 gallon of water to flush liquids and 1.6 gallons to flush solids. They are a great way of conserving water.

On the other hand, single-flush toilets use the same amount of water regardless of whether you are flushing liquids or solids.

2. One-Piece Vs. Two-Piece Toilets

One-piece toilets are made with the toilet tank and bowl joint together, while two-piece toilets are made with the bowl and tank as separate bodies. The one-piece toilets are, therefore, more compact than the two-piece toilets.

In terms of installation, it is easier to install the two-piece toilets than the one-piece toilets. This is because you will only need to install the bowl and then install the tank. You can therefore do it on your own.

However, The one-piece toilets are quite heavy, and you should look for an extra pair of hands during installation.

Two-piece toilets are shipped in 2 different boxes, which can at times arrive at different times. One-piece toilets are shipped whole but are more susceptible to breakages than two-piece toilets.

It’s not always that one-piece toilets are cheaper than two-piece toilets. Some two-piece toilets are way more expensive than one-piece toilets.

3. Gravity Flush Vs. Pressure-Assist Toilets

Gravity flush toilets depend solely on gravity for flushing to occur. When you push the flush handle, a huge amount of water is released into the toilet bowl, immediately initiating a siphon effect at the toilet trap. Therefore waste is sucked into the drainpipe.

Pressure-assisted toilets have a secondary tank inside the water tank called a pressure vessel. Therefore, the water in the tank is mixed with the compressed air, and when you flush the toilet, the water rushes into the bowl forcefully, emptying the bowl.

How to Buy a Comfort Height Toilet

comfort-height-toilet

When looking to buy a comfortable toilet, the main objective is to buy a toilet with a bowl height higher than a standard toilet. You should, however, not restrict yourself to the toilet bowl height only because other factors are important as well.

What should you consider when buying a comfortable toilet apart from toilet bowl height?

The Cost

The cost of toilets varies from one toilet to another, even amongst comfort height toilets from the same manufacturer. It is not always that the most expensive toilet will serve you the best, but there is always a chance that if you go for the cheapest, you will become your plumber’s cash cow. And plumbers are not affordable.

There are inexpensive, well-made toilets, so you need to do thorough research before settling on one particular model. While considering buying a certain toilet, don’t forget to check what it comes with and does not.

Some toilets are sold without accessories like toilet seats, toilet bolts, wax rings, and water supply lines. If you add the cost of these items to the original price of the toilet, the total cost will, of course, be higher than advertised.

Toilet Dimensions

Apart from the toilet bowl height, other comfortable height toilet dimensions are very important to note down before buying a toilet. The total height of a toilet is normally not a big concern for most people, but the length and width are.

These dimensions are extremely important, especially when you have a small bathroom. Sometimes a difference of one inch can be the difference between a door opening and a door not opening. The bathroom sink and toilet are sometimes separated by an inch or two.

Getting the toilet dimensions in advance is, therefore, very important. People with small bathrooms were in the past forced to install round-front toilets because they take up less space than elongated toilets.

These sent toilet manufacturers back to the drawing board, and they developed compact elongated toilets. These toilets are designed to take up the space that would otherwise have been occupied by a round toilet but have an elongated toilet bowl. An example of such a toilet is the Kohler Santa Rosa comfort height toilet.

Water Consumption

Some toilets are more water-efficient than others. Gone are the days when you used to buy a 3.5-gallon per flush toilet. These days toilets use 1.6 gallons of water per flush or less.

A toilet that consumes less water and can flush efficiently will reduce your water bills and is also good for the environment. In the United States, all the toilets sold must not consume more than 1.6 gallons per flush.

In the State of California, the laws are even stricter. Every single toilet sold should have a rating of 1.28 gallons per flush or less.

Flushing Power

The ability of a toilet to flush well is a concern for all toilet buyers. Toilet manufacturers are always designing new flushing systems to help them make toilets with high flushing power while at the same time using less water.

comfort-height-toilet

Most modern toilets in the market flush quite well unless you get a defective one which sometimes happens. To help you know how a toilet might flush, check the size of its flush valve and trapway.

A wider flush valve means water is dumped into the toilet bowl faster, which creates a bigger force, and therefore the waste exits through the toilet trap more forcefully. Apart from the flush valve and trap size, the toilet bowl and flapper’s design also contribute to the effectiveness of a toilet’s flushing capability.

Type of Flushing System

While buying a comfortable height toilet, or any other toilet for that matter, you will have to choose a single flush, dual flush, gravity flush, or pressure-assisted flushing toilet.

After every flush, a single-flush toilet will only use a specific amount of water. On the other hand, a dual-flush toilet allows you to use 2 different amounts of water. It has a low water consumption option for flushing liquids and a higher water consumption option for flushing solids.

Gravity flush toilets work by dumping a large amount of water in the toilet bowl, which creates a siphon effect at the toilet trap. The contents of the bowl are then sucked inside the drainpipe.

Pressure-assisted toilets have a secondary tank inside the toilet tank called a pressure vessel. This pressure vessel holds compressed air, which mixes up with the income water in the toilet tank. When you flush the toilet, water under pressure enters the bowl and flushes down everything.

Toilet Rough-In

The rough-in of a toilet is the distance between the rear wall and the center of the toilet drainpipe. Alternatively, you can measure the distance between the rear wall and one of the 2 toilet bolts if your toilet is installed. Always measure from the wall itself and not the baseboard. The base is normally about ½ inch thick.

The standard toilet rough-in is 12 inches. However, 10 and 14-inch rough-in toilets exist, especially in old houses. You can replace a toilet with a big rough-in with one with a small rough-in but not vice versa. For instance, you can replace a 14-inch rough-in toilet with a 12-inch rough-in toilet, only that a 2-inch gap will be left at the back of the toilet.

If you have a rear outlet toilet which is also known as a back outlet toilet, the rough-in is measured from the floor to the center of the outlet pipe.

On the other hand, if you have a corner toilet, the rough-in should be measured from any of the sidewalls to the center of the drainpipe.

It is absolutely important to measure your toilet rough-in before buying a new one. You wouldn’t want to end up with a toilet you can’t install.

Type of Toilet Bowl

Toilet bowls are either round or elongated, which are also called oval. A round toilet bowl has a length of about 16.5 inches, while elongated toilet bowls have a length of 18.5 inches.

Elongated toilet bowls are more comfortable than round toilets, while round toilets are more space-efficient than elongated toilets.

A comfortable height toilet with an elongated toilet is always a good combination. If you have a smaller bathroom, get a compact elongated toilet.

Color

Most toilets are white, and most people prefer them that way. It is easy to spot dirt on a white toilet; the color helps you maintain the highest hygiene standards. Porcelain, the material which toilets are made from, is also white, so it is always easy to have the toilet in white.

Toilets are also available in other colors, but black is gaining more traction. More people are buying black toilets, which look great, but you will need to style them with other items in the bathroom, say a black toilet and sink combo.

Black toilets are, however, more expensive than white toilets. If you need a comfortable black height toilet, then Kohler is the market leader. The Kohler Cimarron, black comfort height toilet, wouldn’t be a bad choice.

Toilet Design

comfort-height-toilet

Toilets come in various designs like s one-piece, two-piece, skirted, non-skirted, etc. The decision to buy one design as opposed to the other depends on the buyer’s preference.

One-piece toilets have the toilet tank and bowl made as one-piece and have a seamless design that is more compact and sleek. They are, however, heavy and hard to transport and install. They are broken during the shipping of more than two-piece toilets.

Two-piece toilets are designed with the tank and the bowl being separate pieces and are only joined together during installation. They are shipped in two boxes; one may arrive before the other.

Skirted toilets have a concealed trapway and a smooth surface which is easy and fast to clean. They are, however, harder to install than non-skirted toilets.

Comfort Height Toilet Seats

Some toilets are sold without a toilet seat, and you are therefore forced to buy a toilet seat separately. Sometimes a toilet might be sold with a toilet seat, but you might find it very flimsy and not the quality you would like.

When buying a toilet seat, there are many types to consider. These include soft-close toilet seats, quick-release toilet seats, top-fixing toilet seats, bottom-fixing toilet seats, plastic toilet seats, wooden toilet seats, nightlight toilet seats, heated toilet seats, bidet toilet seats, etc.

I have reviewed the best toilet seats in this post, and you should check it out to help you figure out which one might work well for you.

Final Words

Comfort-height toilets have proven to be very helpful to most people who would otherwise not enjoy sitting on a standard-height toilet. The best comfort height toilet should be comfortable to sit on, should flush well, should be competitively priced, and should also be aesthetically appealing.

If you are buying a tall toilet for an elderly or physically impaired citizen, ensure the toilet is solid on the floor. A wobbly toilet can cause serious bodily harm to vulnerable people.

If you cannot buy a comfortable height toilet yet, toilet seat risers are an inexpensive way of adding an extra height to a standard toilet. Toilet seat risers can be simple, toiler seat risers with arms or toilet sear risers with a toilet safety frame.
