Last Updated on May 18, 2022 by toilethaven
How Do I Pick the Right Toilet Handle?
A toilet handle, which is also known as a toilet lever or a toilet trip is the part of a toilet that is located outside the tank which initiates the flushing process. It is connected to the toilet flapper via a small chain. Pushing the toilet handle down results in the chain lifting the flapper off the flush valve and the water flows to the bowl for flushing.
If you have an understanding of how a toilet works, you would know that a toilet handle is a very important toilet part as without it you can’t flush a toilet. Due to the constant pushing, a toilet handles tend to break or loosen very often necessitating you to replace it.
Sometimes you just want to replace your toilet handle because you don’t like how it looks and would prefer a better made and finished one. Whatever the case, a toilet handle is an extremely important piece and you should try as much as possible and buy a solid one.
Before going ahead to buy any toilet handle, you should take time to first know the type of toilet tank you have. Although most toilet tank handles are universal, there are always a few exemptions.
We will therefore start by looking at the different types of toilet handles and see which one you should buy.
Types of Toilet Handles
1. Front-Mount Toilet Handles
Front-mount toilet handles are the most common of all toilet handles. They are normally mounted on the top left corner of the toilet tank. The main advantage of a front-mount toilet handle is that it saves space by not protruding on the side of the tank, therefore reducing the overall toilet’s width.
Most toilet manufacturer however also produce toilet models with the toilet handle mounted on the right-hand side of the tank at the top. Check your toilet to establish if this is the case.
2. Side-Mount Toilet Handles
A side-mounted toilet handle is one which is mounted on the side of the toilet tank. This used to be the norm many years ago but more and more toilet tanks are having their handles mounted at the front.
This type of toilet handles are mounted on the left side of the toilet tank but some are also mounted on the right. Again, check your toilet to be sure where the handle should is located.
3. Angle-Mounted Toilet Handles
Almost all toilet tank are rectangular in shape. Some few toilet models have a round or oval-shaped toilet tank and as a result the toilet handle is mounted at an angle.
If you have this kind of toilet handle that you need to replace you might need to search for a replacement harder than other people. The best thing is to get the toilet model number and get an exact original replacement from your toilet manufacturer.

How to Replace a Toilet Handle
A toilet handle is extremely easy to replace. This is one of those tasks I always advise people to always consider doing for themselves as there is no need to call in a plumber unless you really need to.
One thing you must know is that there is a nut on the inside of the tank holding the toilet handle in place. This nut is always reverse-threaded. Instead of the usual righty tighty lefty loosey you do the opposite while loosening and tightening it.
As soon as you manage to remove that nut from the old toilet handle then your job is done. Insert the new toilet handle lever and tighten it in place.
You must always be careful to make sure that the lift chain is neither too loose nor too tight. If it is too loose, you will have a toilet that does not flush all the way.
On the other hand, if it is too tight, it might unseat the toilet flapper resulting in a leaking flapper and as a result a running toilet. Ideally, the lift chain should have a ¼ inch slack while not in use.

The 10 toilet handles that I have reviewed here are the best that I know of. Of course there are other good toilet handles out there that I have not talked about. In case you know of a really good one that is not here please tell me about it in the comment section. My readers and I would love to hear about them.
These 10 toilet handles are also not cheap, rather are a bit pricey. I know there are cheaper options which work just fine. Those were however not the inspiration behind writing this post. I love quality and well-made items and only recommend such.
When budget allows, I always advise people to buy a collection of items to go with the toilet handle which actually makes your bathroom look well though-out and decorated.
I evidently have a bias toward Moen but that just because I really like their products a lot. In case you would also like to see best toilet paper holders check out this post. Other than that Thank You!
